Work From Westport
Do you WFH? It’s time to consider WFW (Working From Westport)!
Does it sometimes feel like the world keeps getting more stressful by the day? Your to-do list at home seems to constantly grow, right along with your to-do list at work. And what about all your friends in the group chat, trying to find that magical moment when everyone’s schedule aligns and you can actually hang out?
And working from home is a wonderful time-saver — you’ve got a 30-second commute, you can wear a business-casual shirt and your pajama bottoms on zoom calls, and get some chores done while you break for lunch.
But what if you could get away from your daily chores and the daily grind and work from a place that gives you a whole new perspective? Why not WFW (Work From Westport) this fall?
Of course we have wifi!
Most every hotel and motel in Westport has wifi, some touting high speed. If you want to work with an ocean view, check out our list of ocean view lodging, otherwise there are plenty of charming spots within walking distance or a short drive to the marina or beach. Even some of the RV parks have wifi, just check their websites or call to ask!
What to do on your lunch break when you’re now chore-free
As always, there’s plenty to do in Westport all year long. Here are just a few ideas:
1 - Pick up some fresh seafood from one of Westport’s many fantastic restaurants — check out our listings here. Restaurants with Westport’s Fresh Catch when available are marked with a 🦀 emoji! (Please check the restaurant’s google listing for fall and winter hours.)
If you have a kitchenette in your room, you can always pick up some fresh seafood from Merino’s, Seafood Connection, or fresh off a boat to cook it yourself.
2 - Take a walk and check out the marina to see what a working port looks like. Westport marina is the heart of Washington’s coastal seafood industry, and can be quite an entertaining glimpse into the commercial fishing industry. Additionally, you might come across some very vocal sea lions or seagulls. Note: protect your food at all costs from seagulls. They are not above swooping in and absconding with your fish ’n’ chips with impunity.
3 - Shop! Westport shops have the coolest merch and awesome gifts for the younger set (plushies, anyone?), but you can also find some beautiful housewares, antiques, and, starting in November, some lovely, glittery holiday items to get you into the spirit. (It’s sooner than you think!) You’ll also find art galleries, surf shops, and marine and industrial supplies for the angler in you life. Please check each shop’s google listing for fall and winter hours.
4 - Walk the trail at Westport Light State Park. Put on your warmest fleece and cover it with your most effective windbreaker and take a stroll down this 1.3 mile, paved and ADA-accessible dune trail. 2.6 miles (to the end of the trail and back) works out to about 52 minutes walking an average/moderate speed, which would get you back from lunch just in time to laugh heartily at Chuck’s grammar pun on the 1:00 zoom call.
Walks are both calming and creativity-boosting, said to increase creative output by an average of 60% compared to sitting, according to research by Stanford University. It does this partly by enhancing open-ended, divergent thinking (generating multiple novel ideas), which can help considerably with problem solving. So take a lunch break that’ll bring you back smarter!
5 - Take a nap with the sound of the ocean coming from outside your window instead of your white noise machine.
When the workday is through
Consider a trip to Westport’s Observation Tower to decompress. As the wind whips your hair and the waves break high on the jetty, it gives you some time to let go of the worries of the day and take in the power of mother nature. If it’s dry, a stroll down the beach is also a great way to finish up the day and clear your head for the evening.
For dinner, let one of Westport’s casual, cozy restaurants serve you some amazing comfort food. Barbecue, fish ‘n’ chips, burgers, Mexican, pizza, and of course, more fresh seafood — no matter what you’re craving, you’ll find a delicious, hearty plate of it served with a smile. Feeling adventurous and extroverted? There are a few spots with fun distractions like pool, darts, karaoke, live music, and ping-pong. Great for meeting people if you’re one of those brave souls who sees a stranger as a friend you haven’t met yet!
What to do if your coworker is a Corgi
Did you know that 90% of Westport’s hotels and motels are pet-friendly? So that makes it easy to bring them along on your Working From Westport Adventure! Take a look at our accommodations page — all lodgings with pet-friendly rooms have a paw emoji.
There are so many reasons why Working From Westport could work for you — you can spend time in a place you love while still preserving your PTO, reduce burnout and stress with a change of scenery that refreshes your mental well-being, and boost both your creativity and focus.
