The Groins - Intermediate to Advanced

Surfing The Groins Westport, Washington

The Wave

The Groins are located on the north side of the Westport marina and, during the right conditions, can provide a nice lefthand point break. During sizeable open ocean swells, waves make their way into the harbor and break along the four-finger jetties(or groins). The number one thing to be aware of when planning to surf The Groins is the water moving in and out of Grays Harbor during tidal changes. In the PNW, we sometimes have a near 20-foot tidal change during certain times of the year.

Know before you go

The Groins are not a beginner's surf spot. Knowledge of the tidal currents, wave patterns, and being a strong paddler is advised. Powerful currents can start in a matter of minutes when the tide begins to shift, and it's not uncommon for surfers to be pushed and pulled away from the break during strong currents. Please use caution, and always, if in doubt, don't paddle out!

Where to park

When you drive through the Marina District keep right onto Neddie Rose Dr and park on the north side of the road. You will not be able to see the wave from your car so be prepared to climb up the rock wall to view and access the wave.
